This year marks 40 years since the Marlborough Research Centre (MRC) was established to support locally based scientific research in the primary sectors. The 2023-24 Annual Report reflects on the journey while looking ahead to the challenges and opportunities shaping Marlborough’s future.
At the forefront of this year’s highlights is Te Whenua Tupu – The Living Lab, Marlborough’s newest research facility, to lead sustainable horticulture innovation for decades to come.
We also acknowledge two pivotal retirements: Gerald Hope, who has led MRC with vision and dedication for the past 33 years, and Rob Agnew, whose 38 years of weather science expertise have made an invaluable contribution to Marlborough’s wine industry.
This year’s Annual Report also features groundbreaking advancements, such as DNAiTECH’s revolutionary diagnostic technology developed at our Grovetown Park campus, and research focusing on positive environmental impact, including varietal diversification, vineyard simulation, and bioconversion of organic waste into valuable resources.
Forty years on and still growing—driven by curiosity, collaboration, and a commitment to supporting Marlborough’s primary sectors and local economy.
